The State of Penang has for years been a centre of export-oriented manufacturing in Malaysia. Many global multinational companies, particularly in the high-technology field have operations there and this in turn has spurred growth of local SMEs. In 1997, Mr. Tan Kok Pin, an experienced veteran of database companies Informix and Oracle, saw that the northern area, centred on Penang, was not well-served by any business software resellers and so he decided to start his own company there.
Since then, Selatan Technology Resources Sdn. Bhd. has developed into a group of companies, providing a comprehensive one-stop solution center for Information Technology related services and products. Associate company Selatan Network Solutions Sdn. Bhd. ("SNS") handles all the hardware & networking related services whilst Selatan Business Solutions Sdn. Bhd. ("SBS") focuses on mid to enterprise class solutions, providing software and value-added services for financial, distribution, manufacturing and human resource management.
Mr. Tan related, "When we started the company, we looked at the needs of the local businesses here and decided to specialize in distribution and manufacturing. At the beginning, many of our customers were relatively small, and so we offered an entry-level financial system. However as companies grew, and with larger ones coming in, we needed to offer a more scalable and feature-rich state-of-the-art financial package. After much research, we decided that SAP Business One was the right one for our market."
